45 Life lessons

My Mom sent me this and I found it very true and worth sharing with everyone. We get so cought up with life that we forget to live it and remember the simple things.

“To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me… It is the most-requested column I’ve ever written. Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone…

4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.

8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.

12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie.

Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ’In five years, will this matter?’

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.

35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative — dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

These lessons we all know but can easily forget. So let’s not forget them and start living great lives!

Musical Mondays- Drop City Yacht Club

The idea of Musical Mondays came from the fact that Courteney and I love music. She being a dancer (dances like everywhere lol). Our taste in music is strange from the somberness sounds of Lana Del Rey to the local Hip Hip of SA. We pretty much love all genres of music.

I love discovering the new kids on the block before they get crazy popular and we love the pop tunes too. My latest Craze is Drop City Yacht Club. I can’t put my finger on them and say exactly what it is I like about them but their music is just cool and they have a cool swag about them too. Actually knowing only one song the debut single Crickets. I can tell they are going to be something, definitely a group to keep your eye on.

The members of Drop City Yacht Club include A-Wolf (Anthony Cozzo) and Kristo, two rappers and THX one producer.

The group is known to not take a typical approach to the makings of a rap record, as they describe themselves to be individually crazed artists all collaborating into one unique approach. Their style includes a fuse of savvy hip hop, crafty pop and a splash of light 60’s rock. Group Member A-Wolf would describe these characteristic of their craft similar to the Beach Boys and Beastie Boys.  There album will be released later this year should make for an interesting listen.

In  a  world where everything thing sounds oddly the same the unique guys stand out. I love the Hip Hop and soulfulness of the debut single Crickets. It seriously just makes you want to groove on the beaches of Miami in Summer! In reality it is a clod winters afternoon in Cape Town. I love how music can transport you to different destination even if it’s only it’s only your head.

At What Cost…

Life is a strange thing. People often telling you live each day as if it’s your last. For some people it is very easy because what they do everyday is something that they love doing and for those that have found it you are truly blessed.

For many people finding a job to just make ends meat is the reality we live in today. I commend those that despite their situation still make it in life even if it is only in small way it is better than nothing. The life you want to live ultimately comes down to the choices you make for yourself. Don’t allow your circumstances to define you.

It is so easy to get stuck in a rut and be defined by mundane living, selling your soul to a system of  a corporate institution and living for greed and money. Yes we all need money to survive and it makes life easier but at what cost to you.

I live a great life all thanks to my parents. Lately I have seen my step dad give his life to his work, even when we are having family time I can see his present but his mind is probably still on work. Every minute he gets his on his laptop because he just has too much work to do.

This made me think, what kind of life are you living when you give all of it to job that abuses you but you give it everything. Is it worth it… You only have one life and yes giving up is not always recommended but you need a balance. When the scales of life are not balanced things that will show you, you need to slow down will.

God works in mysterious ways. I remember about 2 years ago giving everything to my job but still not being good enough and the stress that came made me despise my job.My body started giving up on me slowly I was diagnosed with asthma and depression, this was a very low part in my life’s journey. I had to make a choice, for me it was hard but I had to leave that job staying there was killing my spirit everyday.

I saw this happening to my Step dad but because he’s such a strong person and never allowed people to step on him at work or life it is easy to assume that he had it covered and it was just another day in the office.

Until something scary happened and he had to be rushed to hospital to get all sorts of tests done. It was scary to see him in such a vulnerable position in hospital. It is life changing and  we are so grateful it is not as serious as it could have been. Nonetheless this is a sign from God, he needs to put his life first and take better care of himself. It was an eye opener for the entire family.

As we continue to pray for his recovery. I pray he opens his eyes and realizes his family will rather see him happy then a slave to a job that is killing him slowly, piece by piece and together we will look after each other. So here I sit writing this thanking God, that this was just a scare and his safely at home recovering with all of us by his side.

This situation puts life into perspective. We so easily get caught up in life and go on without taking a step back and actually asking yourself, why you doing certain things. It is very important that you are happy and keep praying to god in good and bad times for guidance.

Biggest life lesson to date don’t take life for granted it can be taken away from of us in a heartbeat. God had to remind us that he has a plan for his children by doing this to our family so we can take a step back and let God take control of his life before he hurts himself further.

So while we go through this time of stepping back and re-evaluation,this will teach us all to make wise decisions, look after ourselves and trust God because life is not in our control.

YouTube Addiction – Finding The Nomads

In my previous post (here) I gave you a taste of my version of a healthy addiction called YouTube lol. I seriously just had too much to say and did not want to cram everything into one post. It’s long enough as it is. I hope you enjoyed reading it and excited to find out more as I continue.

Steve Booker and Dave Erasmus friends of Louis and Ben also accompanied them to the meet-up they have Youtube Channels as well but don’t do daily vlogs too often. Dave is very much into music his entrepreneur and did a few Ted Talks (mind blown, amazing guy, doing good!) I have dubbed Steve as Cool dude Silent Steve lover of shiny things lol. He often features in Louis Vlogs that’s how everyone knows him and started his own channel too.

Louis and Steve joint forces and created an amazing clothing line called, Find the Nomad. Louis lives the most nomadic life known to man I often wonder if he ever sleeps. That’s where the name came from. They launched the website while we were at the meet-up, that was pretty cool too see how excited they were about this. Hard work and all the late night Starbucks meetings paid off. They did an impromptu photo-shoot on the beach a few days earlier to get pictures for their website and Caspar Lee was part of it. He’s currently shooting Spud 3 with Troye Sivan another Youtuber now actor. Do yourself a favor and watch the Spud movies if you have not, they very good and a laugh and a half.

Check out Find the Nomads (here)  get yourself a cheeky tee too! You won’t be disappointed.

I am still tripping on the fact that I actually got to speak to Louis (jumping for joy inside). I told him why I enjoy watching him and I could see he really appreciated my kind words. I also told him that my friends don’t understand my obsession with YouTube and they continuously tell me, they don’t know who you are. “I’m always like, they my friends what you talking about lol “(Yes saying that aloud to Louis sounded better in my head than it did in real life lol) He was sweet though he laughed and said we are friends now. (That awwww moment)

Ben Brown is fairly new to the YouTube community being Athlete; 2 x Kayak World Champion. Amateur surfer and Travel addict!  It was his first meet-up and I am sure there will be plenty more to follow. He is a very cool guy laid back and chilled and what an athlete you will be blown away, if you see what this guy can do. His latest marathon he tackled was the “Mighty” Berg River Marathon check it out his channel. I got to chat to him too and congratulated him on finishing the Berg. He was pretty impressed that I watched his videos and know how many Gopro’s he has lost(about 5 to date, tear tear.) You can see he enjoys putting his vlogs together by the cool editing and filming. He spends about 4 hours editing everyday. Now that’s pure dedication to say the least.

I also met Jess Schmidt a young girl who randomly tweeted Louis after seeing a picture of him and the gang on Instagram and invited them to dinner and they went. (How cool right.) She is also an aspiring YouTuber and has loads of potential, very awesome ,young talented girl.(Keep an eye out for her)

To everyone attention is always nice but I think the fame found Louis compared to some people online searching for fame. That’s why he has remained humble and he has been through many life experiences, to make him they guy he is today and that goes for his friends too. This was just my observation of Louis and a true inspiration to many and all the fans that came out were genuinely nice too. The person he is he has attracted the same sort of people in his fans and that’s amazing. His friends that were with him are great lads and was awesome to meet them all. I wish them nothing but success for the future!

I could go on forever about the world of YouTube, I studied Marketing so it is extremely intriguing how this has just picked up all across the world. I hardly watch TV. It was so awesome to speak to other viewers who watch the same things I do and for once understand my obsession lol That sounds like a new post for a new day…

Don’t forget to subscribe and Follow; FunforLouis, Ben Brown, Steve Booker,Dave Erasmus, Jess Schmidt and get a Find the Nomads Tee!

YouTube Addiction – Cape Town Meet Up

If you have read any one of my previous posts, you would probably pick up I make reference to YouTube more than any other person blogging, I am sure. I have been meaning to write this for a while but kept putting it off and after last night I knew exactly why now is the right time.

My Favorite YouTuber Louis Cole from FunforLouis is in Cape Town and last night at Cavendish Square he had a meet up. After watching almost all his video’s online, I know how crazy these things could be, so not knowing what to expect, I went after work.

Now I explained how dumb I was when I accidentally met Caspar Lee (South African YouTuber) in my Post called Bieber Fever is Real (here). Now I wasn’t prepared for that encounter and I tried to prepare myself for this one best I can by, not thinking about it.

So first things first Courteney couldn’t come with me because she was sick so I had to suck it up and go by myself. I knew I would kick myself later if I missed this opportunity. So I went and Miss Calamity Jane (me) arrive in the parking lot and within 5 minutes I lost my parking ticket (heaven alone knows how!). I spent 15 minutes furiously searching for it then I decided to call off the search and just go meet Louis and friends.

I went inside and found them. We all gathered in the food court, it was a bit of a surreal moment. A guy that I know a lot about and spent almost everyday watching since the beginning of this year, was right in front of me (I am not a stalker, lol). He came with friends, Ben Brown, another Youtuber I started watching, Dave Erasmus, Steve Booker, Nick and Simon Miller, who they’re staying with in Cape Town. A real cool bunch of people.

We were only about 20 people at the meet up and it was cool, strange for Louis because he was used to big crowds of people.

He said it is so much better when it is a small group of people because you can actually chat to them, compared to a large crowd spending most of their time in a line waiting to get a picture.

I didn’t make a complete knob of myself this time (I don’t think). I had a really nice conversation with Dave he was asking me why I enjoy watching Louis? My answer is, he is real and willing to show so much of himself online and his passion for what he does comes through on screen. He’s a real genuine guy, true to himself, exactly what you see on screen you get in real life. I mentioned through watching Louis he inspired me to blog. I am still camera shy but he said I should start to vlog and just give it a try as I have a nice vibe about me (sweet).

His fan base generally is between 13-yr old girls to about 18-yr old girls, a few boys thrown in the mix and a few older girls too (aka me). It’s amazing that he can be an inspiration to the younger generation who will soon be the leaders of tomorrow.

He truly inspires me with his care free take on life, his faith and good heart. I am so tempted to start a YouTube channel and document my life. It may not be half as exciting as his but I just want to make people happy and inspire them too. Life is so short and if I can bring one person a good message, it will make it all worth it. That’s exactly what he does in all his amazing vlogs and what Courteney and I are trying to do with our blog. This is the first Installment of My YouTube Addiction, I just have so much to share.

FYI; I didn’t find my parking ticket but it was the best R60 I’ve ever spent!

Meet -Up Fun

Musical Mondays- AKA and Da L.E.S

We keeping this weeks Musical Monday instalment local “coz local is lekker” lol

As you must be aware by now, Courteney is a dancer dancing for Out Of Africa Dance Academy. Fusion X  is a dance crew formed at the Academy. They have been very blessed to get asked to dance back up for any performances they have on this morning news and lifestyle show called Expresso. They were asked to perform with two of SA’s biggest hip hop artists AKA and Da L.E.S on the show this morning.

Early morning wake up call had me taking  Courteney off to the set, we left home and got the the studio at 6am, now that’s early for Monday morning.

AKA and Da L.E.S were on the couch in the green room. We greeted politely, as we were the first of the dancers to arrive . Everyone came shortly afterwards the dancers warmed up and were ready to take center stage.

They performed their new track called Kontrol (this tune just makes you want to groove) and got the Rappers doing some dance moves too, that was fun and even crazier to watch live. I was busy behind the scenes taking pictures and recording the performance I love being in that atmosphere, it’s such a great opportunity for these dancers as well. Everyone was hyped after the performance taking pictures and having a good laugh.

More about AKA

2 X SAMA 18 Award Winner Kiernan Forbes (AKA), previously known for his part in the Hip Hop group Entity, has gone his separate way, allowing the spotlight to shine on his foreseen solo career. Now the rapper better known as AKA is a Winner of The Channel O Music Video Award and 4 X Metro FM Award Best Produced, Best Hip-Hop, Best Pop Single and Best Newcomer! AKA dabbles in voice over recordings, event MC, music production and is affiliated with the widely acclaimed SA music production group, IV League, but as a Hip-Hop Recording Artist, one can say he has found his true calling. His had a good run thus far performing overseas and alongside  Kid Cudi , NEYO, Kanye West and D’Banj here in S A.

More about Da L.E.S

Rapper, entrepreneur, trend setting socialite and reality TV star are some of the titles that describe the phenomenon that is Da L.E.S. At only 26 years old this premier entertainer has had a career that has seen him share stages with heavyweights such as Kelly Rowland, Rick Ross, T-Pain and 2Face in concerts across the African continent. Da L.E.S has never been one to follow the status quo and this is evidenced through his story. He was born in Washington to South African parents who were studying in the United States and after spending his formative years in the U.S. the family returned to South Africa in 1993.

These are two guys to watch out for… if you into the South African Hip Hop scene they are hot off the press!
